Your Book, Your Voice: A Guide to Creating Your Audiobook
Teignmouth Bookfest Saturday 7th November 2026
Ever wondered what it would take to turn your book into an audiobook? Whether you're a published author, self-publishing your first book or still working on your manuscript, creating an audiobook might be easier than you think.
Audiobooks have opened up a whole new way for people to enjoy books. Whether they're driving, walking the dog, exercising or simply relaxing at home, more people are choosing to listen to stories rather than read them.
For authors, that presents an exciting opportunity. An audiobook can help you reach a wider audience, bring your writing to life in a different way and create another potential source of income from a book you've already written.
But where do you start?
Join us at the Teignmouth Book Festival
We're delighted to be taking part in the Teignmouth Book Festival, where Steve Hindley from iNarrator will be hosting a practical workshop:
Your Book, Your Voice: A Guide to Creating Your Audiobook
At iNarrator, we work with authors to turn their manuscripts into professionally produced audiobooks from our recording studio here in Teignmouth, Devon.
One of the things we regularly hear from authors is that they'd love to create an audiobook, but they're unsure about the process, the technology or how much it might cost.
That's exactly what this workshop is designed to help with.
What will we cover?
We'll take you through the audiobook production process, explaining what's involved and helping you understand the different options available.
Why create an audiobook?
We'll look at the opportunities audiobooks offer authors, the different audiences you could reach and why audio might be a worthwhile addition to your publishing plans.
Should you narrate your own book?
There's something special about hearing an author tell their own story, particularly with memoirs and personal non-fiction. But author narration isn't necessarily the best choice for every book.
We'll explore the advantages of narrating your own work, when a professional voice actor might be a better option and what to consider before making that decision.
How is an audiobook actually made?
From preparing your manuscript and stepping up to the microphone through to editing, mastering and final production, we'll explain how a written book becomes a finished audiobook.
You'll also get to hear real recording examples and discover what happens behind the scenes to create the professional sound listeners expect.
How long does it take and what does it cost?
This is usually one of the first questions authors ask us.
We'll explain how audiobook length is calculated, how long recording and production typically take, and the different factors that influence the final cost.
How do you publish your audiobook?
Once your audiobook is finished, how do you get it into the hands (or ears!) of listeners?
We'll explore the options for distributing your audiobook, including platforms such as Audible and Spotify, and some of the decisions you'll need to make before publishing.
Do you need any recording experience?
Absolutely not.
This workshop is designed for authors, not audio engineers. You don't need to understand microphones, recording software or audio editing to take part.
Our aim is to make the whole process easier to understand and give you the information you need to decide whether creating an audiobook is right for you.
There will also be opportunities to ask questions and hear examples of professionally produced audiobook recordings.
Bringing your book to life in South Devon
We're fortunate to have our audiobook recording studio right here in Teignmouth.
At iNarrator, we offer authors the opportunity to spend a few days recording their book in a professional studio, with an experienced engineer on hand to take care of the technical side of things.
For authors travelling from further afield, it can even become a short working break by the sea, combining recording sessions with some time to enjoy everything South Devon has to offer.
We also work with professional voice actors for authors who would prefer someone else to narrate their work, and provide editing and mastering services for authors who choose to record at home.
There isn't one right way to create an audiobook. The important thing is finding an approach that works for you, your book and your budget.
